Named 2008 Young Engineer of the Year
March 14, 2009 – The Rochester Engineering Society (RES) named Satish G. Kandlikar, Ph.D, the 2008 Leo H. East Engineer of the Year and Venkatsh G. Rao, Ph.D., the 2008 Kate Gleason Young Engineer of the Year during its annual Gala held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
Dr. Kandlikar, Gleason Professor of Mechanical Engineering, RIT, has been engaged in the practice of engineering for over 30 years, both as a consultant and a researcher. He has been associated with RIT since 1980. He remains very active in professional societies including the ASME for which he founded the Heat Transfer Technical Chapter in Rochester. He also founded the International Conference on Microchannels and Minichannels. One of his most notable contributions to the Rochester community was establishing the E3 Fair in 1991 with the purpose to increase interest in engineering and technology in middle school students.
Presenting the award to Dr. Kandlikar was Dr. Harvey Palmer, President of the Rochester Engineering Society and Dean of the Kate Gleason College of Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Palmer was the 2007 Engineer of the Year. The award was named in memory of RG&E Vice President, Leo H. East, and honors those individuals in our community with outstanding accomplishments in engineering practice, professional leadership, business acumen and community service. RG&E has been a corporate sponsor since 1964.
Dr. Rao, a member of Research and Technology Staff at Xerox Corporation, has achieved professional recognition with 20 peer-reviewed papers in international conferences and journal publications, 5 patent applications in progress, and imminent technologies in new Xerox solutions and services. He was outstanding in both undergraduate as well as graduate school and was recognized with several scholarships and fellowships including the Russi Modi fellowship and Telluride scholarship.
He is a member of IEEE Control Systems Society where he serves as a reviewer for the Transactions on Robotics publication and an invited blogger. Rao has been an IEEE member since 1999.
Presenting the award to Dr. Rao was Mike Eastman, Vice President of Gas Assets and Meter Operations
Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. The Kate Gleason Young Engineer of the Year Award is endowed by the Gleason Foundation to annually recognize and honor the outstanding achievements of a Rochester-area engineer, 34 years of age or younger, in the early stages of their career.
The four finalists for the Engineer of the Year award represented a distinguished group of Rochester-area engineers. In addition to Dr. Kandlikar the other finalists were:

Stephen Hoover, PhD, Vice President of Xerox Research Center
James McIntosh, PE, Rochester City Engineer
The five finalists for the Young Engineer of the Year award include a talented group of engineers who have made significant contributions to the field. In addition to Dr. Rao the other finalists were:

Cheryl Cheng, Image Quality Assurance Engineer, Eastman Kodak Company
Mary Baker Steblein, EIT, Civil Engineer, LaBella Associates, PC
Christopher White, Development Engineer, Eastman Kodak Company
Additionally, over $45,000 in engineering scholarships were presented to 32 high school and college level students to encourage and support engineering as a career choice for young people.
Also in attendance were Michael Garland, PE Monroe County Department of Environmental Services Director, and Mayor Bob Duffy. In their remarks to the 300 Gala attendees both Garland and Duffy noted the importance of engineering professionals to the economic vitality of Monroe County and the City of Rochester. This theme was reinforced by keynote speaker Dennis Mullen, the President of the Upstate Empire State Development Corporation.
The RES serves the field of engineering in the Rochester-Monroe County area and is comprised of corporate, affiliate societies, and individual members. RES promotes and celebrates excellence, innovation, cooperation, professional growth and fellowship in the engineering, scientific and allied professions.
