| At our 107th Annual Gala on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, we presented over $50,000 in scholarships. These were awarded to local high school and college students in support of their engineering education. |

2009 Scholarship Awards

RES Joseph W. Campbell Memorial, RES Susan L. Costa Memorial, RES David Fergusson, Rochester Engineering Society, Maletta Foundation, Staud-Freckleton Award, and CHA Adam W. Lawas Award
For the 21st year the awards will be presented to undergraduate students already enrolled in an engineering or engineering technology program. The awards for this year are:
The Rochester Engineering Society has established the Joseph W. Campbell Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,500, to honor the memory of Executive Director, Joe Campbell.
The Rochester Engineering Society has established the Susan L. Costa Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,500, to honor the memory of Executive Director, Sue Costa. This scholarship has been established to reconize the student who has both maintained academic excellence and been actively involved in extra-curricular and/or community activities.
The Rochester Engineering Society Scholarship Award, in the amount of $1,500, is merit based and presented to an outstanding engineering student who has consistently maintained academic excellence.
The David Fergusson Memorial Scholarship Awards are made possible through the generosity of Mr. David V. Fergusson and Mrs. Jerold Foland whose donation established the award in memory of their father, David Fergusson. Individual donations, other memorial donations, and bequests are also used to provide scholarships. The RES announces one $1,000 David Fergusson Memorial Scholarship Award.
Again this year, Anthony G. Maletta P.E., a long-standing member of the RES and a retired CEO of the Sear-Brown Group, has made a generous donation to the RES Scholarship fund through the Maletta Foundation, requesting that the money be used to provide one student with a $2,000 award for engineering study.
The Staud-Freckleton Scholarship of $1,000 is awarded in memory of Marguerite and Karl Staud, and Kathryne and Howard Freckleton, in the amount of $1,000.
Clough Harbour & Associates LLP has established the Adam W. Lawas Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, to honor the memory of Associate, Adam W. Lawas, P.E. This scholarship has been established to recognize a mechanical engineering student who has maintained academic excellence and demonstrated experience and interest in the practical application of mechanical engineering principles.

Rochester Section, IEEE Awards
Several years ago, the Rochester Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers decided to recognize student members of IEEE for their scholastic achievement. RES interviews and selects students who meet IEEE criteria. This year, two $1,500 scholarships are awarded with one named and to honor the memory of Kenneth Arnold, Senior Member of the IEEE, Chair of the Section 2005-2006.

Rochester Section, ASCE Award
This is the sixteenth annual American Society of Civil Engineers Rochester scholarship award, bestowed upon a candidate selected for outstanding combination of academic excellence, activity in ASCE student chapter functions, and professional civil engineering career pursuits. This $2,000 award is made possible by the generous donations of the Douglas Zefting Fund, a variety of events, and individual local members.

Rochester Section, AFE Awards
The Rochester Chapter of the Association for Facilities Engineering awarded three $1,000 scholarships to college students studying engineering. The students complete short essays regarding their career direction, short and long term goals, personal and academic achievements, and the reasons for choosing engineering as a career.

Section 4, NYSATE Awards
The New York State Association of Transportation Engineers, Section 4 (Rochester) sponsors an annual scholarship program to all dependents of our members. The scholarship is in recognition of the applicant’s outstanding academic achievements, work experiences and participation in extracurricular activities and civil organizations.

Rochester Section, ASME Awards
Two of our local engineering institutions have selected engineering students for their excellence in mechanical engineering.
