Waste cooking oil can be a real problem! It clogs sink drains and sewers, can quickly ruin septic tanks, and pollutes the environment if dumped in landfills. And storing waste oil and grease onsite is a health risk and potential fire hazard.
What can you do? Convert waste cooking oil to biodiesel, a vegetable oil- or animal fat-based fuel that can be used as a diesel blend. Monroe County’s EcoPark maintains a convenient drop-off location where waste cooking oil is collected and processed into biodiesel to run service vehicles and maintenance equipment, such as lawnmowers.
Do you own or operate a restaurant where waste cooking oil is generated and operate diesel delivery vehicles? Work in the waste disposal industry? Are you in local/regional/state departments of transportation and environmental services? If yes, plan to attend a special biodiesel workshop at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on October 5, 2012.
Monroe County and the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) will explain how to save money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create a reliable outlet for used cooking oil and grease. Topics include:
