Title: Town of Greece Community Center Expansion

Presented by: Patrick Williams, PE, SE and Laura Alexander, PE, SE from Passero Associates

Abstract

This session will provide an in-depth technical overview of the Town of Greece Community Center Expansion project, designed and constructed in two phases. Presenters Patrick Williams, PE, SE and Laura Alexander, PE, SE will discuss the structural engineering challenges and solutions that shaped both the renovation of the existing facility and the design of the new 65,000 square foot two-story addition.

The talk will highlight the structural complexities of integrating new construction with the existing facility, retrofitting aging structural systems, and responding to program-driven constraints. A special focus will be given to the architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) bridge connector—a 5,000 square foot enclosed steel structure—designed to accommodate limited foundation locations while delivering a high architectural impact. Attendees will gain insight into how serviceability demands, spatial programming, and site limitations drove system selection and structural detailing.

The presentation will include project modeling workflows using Revit and RAM Elements, load case design considerations, and the impact of modern AESS standards on project delivery. This session is ideal for professional engineers, architects, students and industry-related professionals interested in real-world structural coordination, steel design, and integrated delivery strategies on public sector building projects.

Title: High Falls State Park Community Design Workshops

Presented by: Bill Price, a Licensed Landscape Architect with experience in local government planning and private developments & Dawn Noto, the Executive Director of Community Design Rochester and also serves as President of Susan B Anthony Neighborhood Assoc.

Abstract

The State of New York has committed to building a new urban State Park in Rochester New York. The High Falls State Park, located just north of Downtown, will provide an exciting new space to our community.  Community Design Rochester (CDR) is an organization that creates vibrant, equitable, and resilient communities by engaging, educating, and empowering stakeholders in crafting purposeful design. CDR was tasked with hosting a community design workshop to help planners learn what the community’s vision for the High Falls State Park should be.  The presentation will discuss the planning process used to create optimal outcomes and guide future development of the park.

Title: Niagara Parks Power Station Museum Conversion

Presented by: Marcelo Gruosso, Chief Operation Officer, Niagara Parks Commission

AbstractThe Niagara Parks Power Station, formerly the Rankine Generating Station, is a former hydro-electric generating station along the Canadian side of the Niagara River in Niagara Falls, Ontario, that opened in 1905 and was decommissioned in 2006. Niagara Parks recently completed an award-winning adaptive reuse project to transform the former power station into a new guest experience, complete with interactive exhibits, restored artifacts and the Tunnel, a 2,200-foot walk through the original tailrace tunnel that leads to a brand-new viewing platform offering never-before-seen views of Niagara Falls. Inside the power station, guests learn about the history of hydroelectric power generation and how it impacted the development of the Niagara region and beyond. Since first opening the power station in 2021, Niagara Parks has continued to expand the experience and introduce new elements including a nighttime experience with a sound and light show, a Tesla Coil installation with hourly demonstrations, a complimentary bilingual audio tour and most recently, a new temporary educational exhibit that explores the life and works of legendary engineer, Nikola Tesla, the result of a partnership with the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade, Serbia. The Niagara Parks Power Station is now Niagara Parks’ top attraction behind its flagship, Journey Behind the Falls. Learn how this fascinating new attraction was created!
