Slow Down, Move Over Laws: Investigating Factors Influencing Drivers’ Behavior and Compliance (1 PDH Pending)

Presented by: Amy Benedick and Tom Jacobs

Abstract

In 2024 alone, 46 emergency responders were killed in roadside incidents. These deaths underscore the persistent safety gaps in the roadside environment, even with Sow Down Move Over laws enacted nationwide. This study examined factors contributing to inconsistent motorist compliance with these statutes.

Title: Crash Testing of NYSDOT Roadside Safety Hardware at Calspan MASH Accredited Barrier Lab (1 PDH)

Presented by: Dr. Ali Atahan, PhD

AbstractCalspan has been testing NYSDOT roadside safety hardware since 1960's. In 2016 when AASHTO published MASH document all the DOT's agreed to update their legacy hardware through full scale crash testing. NYSDOT contacted Calspan, an accredited MASH crash testing facility, to evaluate their soil and bridge deck-based hardware. In this presentation crashworthiness and structural adequacy evaluation of two of those systems are explained in detail. Test results showed that both designs were MASH compliant.

Title: The Anatomy of a Car Crash and the Ethics of Using the Dead presentation (1 PDH)

Presented by: Dr. Ashraf Ghaly, PhD, PE

AbstractCar crashes claim over 100 lives daily in the US. Safety features used to reduce injuries and fatalities can only be developed with research that includes not only computer simulations but also real crash tests. Crash tests may only yield meaningful results if the test object realistically simulate passengers. Dummies and mannequins are mostly employed but cadavers and animals have also been used resulting in collusion between reality and morality. This prestation is designed to address the above issues.
